This new version of the patch changes clean: to clean:: to allow
extending the clean rules in sub makefiles and cleans the directory in
clean:: instead of after use.

It works, but is not the most elegant way to solve this; I think we're
better off with the fix than without, but I would be happy to receive a
suggestion on how to implement this properly.
