After more investigation it looks like this is caused by flaky hardware
on my side.
This bug report can be closed. If in the unlikely event that it's not
caused by my hardware, I will open a new / reopen the report.

Could you please attach the output of the following:
dpkg --list *gstreamer*|grep ^ii
Also, could you use gst-launch-0.10 (see 'man gst-launch-0.10' if this
is unclear) to get more verbose output from gstreame
