Problem solved in my pc.
Used the "startupmanager" which I had installed some time ago and forgot about
it. After that, "gdmsetup" unlocks Ok.

the gdmsetup privilege escalation problem is only related to the awesome
window manager, not the default gnome or unity.
using gnome as desktop i could set the default session of my user.

as expired.

Further testing shows this bug occurs if gdmsetup is called from another
windowmanager (i'm using awesome here, still freedesktop compliant): the
privilege escalation program doesn't gets called to unlock the widget.
once unlocked gdm lets one change the default system-wide (for all
users), but no
This same bug occurs in a freshly installed ubuntu 11.04.
GDM doesn't asks if the default should be changed and gdmsetup stays
grey, the unlock button does nothing, no access to the selection.

I reopen as I can now reproduce :
I set an autologin with GDM toward Lubuntu session, then I set an autologin
with LXDM toward Lubuntu session.
So now I always start directly with Lubuntu session.
Therefore,
- on Lubuntu session, I cannot unlock gdmsetup
- when I unlog, I go to LXDM, then log in
closing the bug since that works now and didn't seem to be a gdm issue
but rather a lxdm one

Sorry i can not reproduce any more , now I can unlock gdmsetup.
BUT: it is strange that GDM randomly appears instead of LXDM (if I
reboot several times I get alternatively GDM then LXDM then GDM then
LXDM ...)
I will fill a new bug for this.
