I think this bug is related to using devices by uuid inside the fstab
and not to KDE or any of its updates.
I have 1 ntfs partition and 2 vfat partitions in my fstab. I had
reverted them to the classic /dev/hdXY naming scheme inside the fstab so
that I don't have to face this bug. I fully updated
Works for me in Kubuntu 6.10 AMD64

It looks like the problem was solved by the latest updates of Kubuntu
Edgy, at least as far as the Kubuntu 32bit is concerned.

KDE 3.5.5 solved this problem, however if I restart the Xserver, log in
and insert a DVD (data) an empty window shows up and I have to press the
Refresh button in order to see its files.

I confirm this behavior. One does not need to restart X for it to
happen. Just by logging off and logging back in, partitions are
unmounted.
However, this seems to only affect ext3, reiserfs or xfs partitions.
vfat and ntfs partitions remain mounted.
