This issue appears to have coincided with the removal of "unmount" from
the nautilus right-click menu. Could they be related?

I got exactly the same issue with a Dell e6500 laptop. K3b and HAL are
installed in Lucid environment (not KUBUNTU).
It cannot erase CD-RW with an error message like "unable to unmount
medium".
After I manually umount the /dev/sr0 through command line, I can erase
it without problem.

I have now confirmed this bug on two desktop machines with two different
hardware sets. One of these has an older generic CD-R/CD-RW writer while
the other has a modern ATAPI DVD A DH16A6L-C combination CD/DVD writer.

After a reboot and second attempt to erase the CD-RW the initial error
reoccurred: "1. Probably a buffer underrun occurred, 2. please choose a
lower burning speed, 3. Blanking error, 4. Sorry no error handling yet."

I have encounter this same problem since installing Lucid and K3B.
Today I tried to duplicate the bug prior to reporting here and managed
to erase one CD-RW without any problems. In trying to erase a second and
sebsequent CD-RW K3B produced the following errors: "1. Probably a
buffer underrun occu

1. When I right-click on the cd-rom it only has the alternatives: open,
copy, rename, copy to, copy disk, blank disk, check disk, eject and
properties. It doesn't have unmount.
2. It's give the same thing.

1. Can you unmount the disk by going to Places -> Computer, right-clicking on
the CD-ROM unmounting it and trying again?
