Purging the fglrx driver and installing the 10.2 drivers for my card
fixes this. I now only need vga=795 and nomodeset to be end the hanging.
I wish that ubuntu could do this out of the box.

I „fixed“ the crashes for a little while with changing to the open
source radeon driver. It ran almost perfectly however with all the
artifacts and undrawn shadows it was unplayable.
A few days later I cobbled together a fix.
