I tried this out with Oneiric, and I didn't get that error. Instead, I
got a whole bunch of other errors. EOG worked just fine, despite all the
error messages. I've attached a log of the new errors.

The only occurrence of
g_app_info_equal
in the eog source in Lucid is
eog-2.30.0/debian/patches/02_toolbar_edit_button.patch
at line 104. Dropping this patch and installing the resulting deb
package silences the annoying terminal noise without real loss of
functionality, because the "open with"
