By using upstream components you get upstream problems, although
downstream it also haven't been fixed yet.
It still affects us on Ubuntu Precise Pangolin 12.04 LTS.

Still experiencing the problem with up to date Lucid Beta 2.
Not sure how a bug report would come through if nothing crashes.
I have a 1440x900 on my laptop. and an external 1920x1080. Once
connected in twinview mode, 1440x900 behaves like 1440x1080 on desktop.
Icons start disappearing to the dead
I can also confirm it still happens, somehow the dead space of the
desktop is still accessible (also by mouse), and thus icons are placed
there. It's been like this for years (see Jeremy Nickurak's links) and a
fix would be highly appreciated!

A related issue, captured in bug #408710, is that Nautilus places icons
in "dead space", the unreachable part of the desktop adjacent to the
smaller of two different sized monitors used simultaneously. This is
still a very common use-case for laptop users.
