I am having the same problem with a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 x64.
Re-installing everything didn't help as mrfelton suggested

FYI: By uninstalling everything todo with MySQL, and all supporting libs
and then reinstalling, the issue was resolved. But clearly this is an
issue in the upgrade process.
