Me too , Ubuntu 10.10 with Glade Geany Gedit and my own program (PyGtk :
gtk.FileChooserDialog).
And I can confirm #6 comment.

I just noticed this problem today. I figured out that I can create a
folder in a subdirectory of my home directory, but whenever I try to
create one right in my home directory it disappears after a second or
two.

Same problem here. Experienced with Firefox and Chromium. It happens
from time to time and persists throughout the session. If it happens it
is there in the "save" as well as in the "open" dialogue. Then it is
impossible to select any file to open.
