I'll download the current alpha and try it out tomorrow.
I still have the system that I confirmed this bug on last year.
It's in everyday use (running debian atm) for my daughter.
I will also compare sound response on a
500MHz blue and a 600MHz snowy.

I have the same hardware and the same problem with ubuntu and debian.
Mine is a Green iMac G3 400MHz DV firewire .
I'm running 2.6.18-4-powerpc with alsa-base 1.0.13-5 on debian 4.0
currently,
but experienced the same issue with ubuntu 6.06
My amixer output in case it's still of use follows
$ amixer
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such device
$ sudo amixer
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such device
$ alsamixer
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
Strange, the mixer in gnome works.

Some additional info: it is the green imac with 350 mhz. I don't know
whether the sound is bad with the green macs with 333 Mhz.
This problem occurs with 2 green imacs with 350 Mhz.
The sound is clear under Mac osx on the same machines.
