I have the same problem too. nvidia geforce2 MX400 card. Problem
persists with both noveau and nvidia binary 96 driver. Reinstalling
driver does not help. using the system by going through safe mode and
booting into low graphics mode. this way it does not freeze, but poor
screen resolution.

Same problem I got the Nvidia 195.36.24 driver and I am on the 2.6.33
kernel.
