I found my problem. Apparently, I stuck
SDL_AUDIODRIVER=pulse
in my environment sometime when I was floundering with a different audio
problem. I took that out of my environment, and I'm all good now.

Which ubuntu version are you using? Did you installed exult from the
official repositories? Did you found any installation error?
Particularly, this can be an error regarding the timidity package not
being installed or correctly configured. Could you add the output of the
"apt-cache showpkg timidi
