Same issue in E6510 using kernel 2.6.32.22.23 and nvidiato driver

machine set to just blank the screen when the lid is closed. When I

Same here:
Dell Inspiron 9200 wirh ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 using opensource drivers.
Computer wakes up, but screen remains off. Notification sounds can be heard so
I think everything else is working properly.

Tested today with kernel 2.6.32-21, and hibernation works flawlessly.
The suspend works partially. It goes into the suspend state and it seems
to wake up, but the display remains blank.
