I discovered the final source of my reported problem. While I had the
same symptoms at both my office Linux (U9.10) and 3 home Linux desktops
(U9.10) I assumed the common thread was the repositories. The error with
my office machine cleared for some unknown reason and I discovered I had

I have new amd64 computer. I installed Kubuntu 9.10 64 bit. After the
installation and sudo apt-get upgrade and reboot this happened to me. I
tried to reinstall the system and exactly the same happens after
upgrading the packages. There seems to be no way to fix this and the
system is not usable.
