I'm the lead developer of xinput_calibrator, the generic touchscreen
calibrator for X.org.
You can find deb packages for lucid in my ppa (can upload it for other releases
too...):

I've also submitted the package to debian-mentors
I have the same problem on Asus R2H, the touchscreen does work but needs
calibration.

The correct calibration program I think is xinput_calibrator [1]
[1] http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/xinput_calibrator
It is simple and usable, actively maintained, works with a number of
drivers, and has both an X11 and GTK version.
If you'd like to try it out, clone and compile the X1
i am testing lucid (beta 2) PC (Intel x86) netbook live with my samsung

the touchscreen is handled correctly but the calibration package needs
to be included and fixed to understand where to find the touchscreen -
it uses HAL and must be changed (i am sure that other input devices
needed to be changed from HAL to the new system). where is a descriptiv
document on the r

in karmic: the calibrate_touchscreen.sh is a link to
../lib/xf86-input-evtouch/calibrate.sh
the code there cannot be executed, because
"Could not initialise connection to hald.
Normally this means the HAL daemon (hald) is not running or not ready."
and it produces a nice error message
