I can confirm this with a MacBook Pro 5,3. It was working fine in
Karmic, best I can remember.
The battery indicator does not show. If I select 'Always display an
icon' in the Power Management preferences, a 'plug' indicator appears
showing that I am charging even though I am running on battery.

There were also no warnings about low-battery conditions. As my battery
ran out, the system unexpectedly tried to suspend (as evidenced by a
dialog saying it failed to), and later went into sudden shutdown.
The shutdown also caused other problems: the real-time clock was reset
to the distant past
