as vikas described the iec958 has a on/off functionallity - and the
sound at the dock is very glitchy if i do with iec958
as i wrote in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=370456
amixer controls %% search the id of IEC-default (at my system 35)
amixer -c 0 cset numid=35 6 %% 6 = 96kHz

The 'fix' described there works. But then, it seems to be like an on/off switch.
Either you get output through at full volume or you don't anything at all :-(.

This still happens; I've got a D610 running Gutsy. Natively, I can get
no sound through the docking station's TRS headphone jack while docked.

With Feisty Fawn I'm experiencing this problem as well. I have a Dell
Latitude D820. I'm also attaching the output of lspci-nv when my
machine is docked.

I have same problem on HP nw8240 with HP Basic Dock. The problem is the
same on Dapper as well as up-to-date Edgy.
