i've tried your suggestion with a new user but it didn't help: i wasnt
able to search my folders through nautilus with a clean profile either.
i think i've isolated the error message: in both the old and the new
profile, nautilus reports the following error in the xsession-errors
file after trying

problem something broken on your user configuration rather than this

no, it doesn't. it's still impossible to do a search as a normal user,
while the search as root works flawlessly.
are there any pieces of information i can provide you with other than
what i have already posted that could help you figure out what's going
on?

I cannot reproduce this error. I have version 2.30.0 in lucid beta.
Perhaps having that version fixes the issue?
