For me the white bar appears sometimes when I log in and when this
happens it always disappears when I open 2 windows, so that the bottom
panel's "Window List" has two entries.

Yes, this problem still regularly occurs in Maverick. It seems random; I
cannot replicate it, but if you move or reload the icon it goes away.
Obvious visual discrepancies like this are as puzzling as they are
annoying.

So, it seems that actually, even if I don't run "killall gnome-panel",
the white bar tends to eventually go away. Maybe the chance of the white
bar appearing (or not appearing) happens every time the panel changes? I
wonder if the white bar can randomly appear after the panel being drawn
without it
Hmm, today when I booted into lucid, gnome loaded with both bug #439448
and this one. I ran "killall gnome-panel" to workaround the other bug
and, to my surprise, the white bar also went away shortly after. This
made me curious and I've tried to experiment a bit with this. First, I
think the fact t
I'm currently using Ambiance, the default theme in Lucid, and I've
noticed the following behaviour.
When I get the white line, I can make it go away by going to System >
Preferences > Appearance, change to another theme (e.g. Clearlooks), and
then change back. When the panel goes back to Ambiance,
This seems to be a problem with the panel or the applet itself. Moving
the window list seperator and then moving it back makes the white line
go away.
