Actually we were lucky yesterday and found that the boot failure was due
to a typo in /etc/interfaces that one of the guys made. It turned out

This is really bad. I never had a problem with ubuntu-desktop! This is
affecting our production environment and we may need to go away from
ubuntu-serve

Just try my luck just now. Using system rescue cd to update the system,
upgraded new kernel linux-image-2.6.32-17-generic-pae ... after restart,
it still hangs.
My other system, IBM x346 works fine, except i can no longer see my
console anymore; message is Video Mode not Support.
