Why do you feel that that should be done? The Linux NIS can happily use
a NIS supplied shadow file natively so there is no need to merge the
password file into the shadow file - you can just distribute the shadow
over NIS too. The MERGE_PASSWD option is there to help interoperability
with other NIS
