I have a desktop with a A785gm-m mobo, a phenom II x4 945 processor and
a GeForce 8600gt video card that works pretty well with this version of
plymouth (also using Kubuntu).

The logo screen is the new ubuntu splash screen while the services are starting.
It is animated until fill the five (or six) points of the "progress".
Sometimes a message to scan hard drives appear (with a message to press C in
order to cancel hard drives scanning)

plymouth itself should never block the boot process, even when it fails.
Can you try hitting Alt+F7, to see whether the login screen is waiting
for you on VT7?
Please also run 'apport-collect' against this bug, your report is
