I've just installed the updated module-init-tools (and other updates) and
commented out the "blacklist viafb" in blacklist.conf.
The computer boots normally.
We'll see what happens with the live CD in a day or so.

It looks like this bug is affecting me too. I have the same graphics
chip. I've tried Leann Ogasawara's v1 kernel with no change. (and
various other things, chronicled in bug 499399.)
Blacklisting viafb means I can now boot with a Lucid kernel (after 3 1/2
months of frustration).
