I checked and I don't have notification-daemon installed on my Karmic
machine. I enclose a screen shot of a list of what I do have installed.

Thanks for taking time to report this bug and help us make ubuntu
better. I also faced this problem today but what you are seeing on
screen is not notify-osd its the notification-daemon (gnome-
notification) have you installed it? if so then please remove it and
notify osd will work fine.
