Progress update: the cached desktop files and some minor speed
improvements reduced the start up time to a third of the dapper version
(from 22 sec to 7 sec on my mac mini)

I don't think so. The dialogue says "Checking installed and available
applications" and then "This may take one or two minutes" (?!?!), so it
seems to be intended behaviour. It happens when I open the program and
_after_ I install an application on all of my systems.
I can't see any bottlenecks in
I cannot confirm this. It takes around 15 seconds for eveything to
happen then does not calculate deps when installing something. Does
running it from a console give any indication of possible bottlenecks?
