Problem: Xsane 0.996 scans for scanner on startup and immediately crashes.
System: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS- the Lucid Lynx
As suggested, ran with command
SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_WIRE=128 xsane >& a.log
Here are contents of a.log

try to run with command
SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_WIRE=128 xsane >& a.log
give attached log
the strange character displayed in the password dialog
can be seen in this log:
