Well, it's possible that it's a new feature not yet included with the
Ubuntu version of MPlayer. Does it work with the latest version
provided by Feisty?

Ubuntu don't have profile support compiled in mplayer, it's not only for
mencoder, mencoder and m
Do you mean the mencoder.conf profiles that are only for encoding? Or
are you talking about some non-existent profile support?
Also, include a copy of your mencoder.conf if you're getting syntax
errors; I may be able to point out what's wrong if anything.
