I initially didn't have any /var/run/console directory at all. I created
the directory and updated /etc/pam.d/common-session as per bug 34063.
After a reboot, g-v-m is now behaving as expected.

Do you have something like /var/run/console/david:7 ? (Where 'david' is

Does this still happen if you upgrade to Edgy? There is a new version
of gnome-volume-manager there.
