The bug exists in ubuntu-lucid-beta2-amd64 running on my Dell Inspiron 1420. For anyone reading this, apart from the shell script fix, one can also open "System->Preferences->CompizConfig Settings Manager" and select "Preferences->Reset to Defaults" to fix this as well. -- mouse bug https://bugs
