I decided to give packaging a try myself, and it appears I've
successfully built Gnote 0.7.3 and uploaded to my PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~thelupine/+archive/ppa/+packages?field.name_filter=&field.status_filter=published&field.series_filter=maverick
This does fix this issue, and hopefully others
My current workaround (until it's fixed in Ubuntu):
$ sudo rm /usr/lib/gnote/addins/0.7.1/libnoteoftheday.so
$ killall gnote
