I have the same issue - however,
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/path/to/extracted/old/libgtk xchat, doesn't completely
do it for me.
Channel colours do change - mostly - but they don't return to brown to
signify there's nothing new in the channel

Note that colors seem to change (i.e. if you get pinged on a channel,
you get the "pinged" color), they just don't revert back to the "normal"
when you check out the channel. At the end of the day, it makes it very
difficult to see any notification.
