Thanks Tomasz, this resolved the issue for me.
In my case, an ATI Radeon Mobility card X300 in a Thinkpad, an upgrade
from Karmic to Lucid installed the nvidia-current package, and left a
message in the Xorg log:
(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not
found)
...
After remove nvidia-current package and reboot GL applications worked:
# LC_ALL=C apt-get remove nvidia-current
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
libmyth-0.22-0 nvidia-185-libvdpau nvidia-curren
I'm getting the same errors after todays upgrade from Karmic to Lucid:
$ glxinfo

you got a broken install probably due to some proprietary driver fking things
up.

A complete reinstall of Kubuntu using the latest daily alternate image
(with KDE 4.4 RC2) still has this bug.

After reinstalling the Sevenmachines PPA nvidia drivers, all direct
rendering works, with the exception of KWin composting under OpenGL, so
I suspect it may be a program specific problem related to the mesa
changes.

I have also noticed that KWin desktop effects under OpenGL have been
knocked out with the latest mesa updates. Whilst other OpenGL
applications work fine, KWin does not (and nor does Wine, for different
reasons). XRender does work, but some options are disabled.
