I have had issues with Synaptic and proxy support in the past, but it works fine in 6.06. Make sure that you've got it configure properly. And yes, you will need to run that proxy command each time you using apt- get/aptitude through the command line, unfortunately. Now that this part is resolved,

Thanks very much. I did apt-get update and it seemed to go fine (though no updates to install - I updated via a broadband connection on the weekend). Do I have to run the export command each time I try to update? When I closed teh terminal, reopened it and then tried 'sudo apt-get update', I got
