how you came to this decision.
1) Openoffice.org has been replaced by LibreOffice in Ubuntu on the Live CD
2) Karmic is End Of Life

Unfortunately there isn't much that can be done here at least until we
get automatically installation of the java bits on first run of OOo. As
the Java stack does not fit on the CD.

Same issue for me on OOo 3.1.1. Installing openoffice.org-java-common
fixed it.
