Thanks for responding.
The answer to your question is yes--after I changed my default video
card from ATI to VESA, the problem went away.
However, I don't consider that this closes the bug, because Ubuntu
shouldn't misdetect a videocard in the first place.
For the record, my video card is an ATI

Just to trying to get some more information, what video card are you
running? Have you modified any of the Xorg configuration at all or
running different drivers?
