It has do a lot with update-manager. The update-manager package also
contains the software-properties (the graphical sources.list editor).
And the editor should not crash if there is no /etc/apt/sources.list.
Why it was removed is not of interest here.

This is the default behaviour of Automatix, it has no sweet way to fail. It has
nothing to do with update manager.
When you installed automatix it broke your repos. It took the good
/etc/apt/sources.list and overwrote them.

The software-properpties seem to be annoyed by user who remove essential
configuration files too :)
This is fixed in my local edgy branch. I will backport the fix to my
dapper branch.

When I click "Repositories" inside of Synaptic after removing
sources.lst it gives the popup above, but doesn't show me the repository
list. I guess Synaptic needs to have some defined behavior if
sources.lst is missing.
