Option 1 was implemented in lxpanel (in lxpanel-indicator-applet-
plugin). It's the same option Awn and Xfce are using for the same
support.

Re-affecting to lxpanel and indicator-applet.
In fact, lxpanel need a plugin to host the indicators, like the
indicator-applet for gnome-panel. It can be build in lxpanel (as a standart
plugin, forking the indicator-applet) or in indicator-applet (as an external
plugin for lxpanel).
