i've decided to mark my own bug report invalid... i never did find out
what was going on, but it only affected me and it hasn't happened in a
long time.

I have since gotten around this problem. It turns out my initramfs was
broken by having been built while libraries were specified in
ld.so.preload (those needed for dante-client to run in the background).
I'm sure my configuration caused this problem, but I am not sure exactly
how.
