I have a similar issue with conversion. If I try to convert the test
flac file into ogg, I get an error message: "no encoder found". Other
files with different encoding (i.e. different than flac) are converter
just fine.
(Running vlc 1.1.4 under Maverick)

I've just retested it and it appears that "Keep original audio track" is
checked on the default "Audio - Vorbis" encoding profile (Which means
the original FLAC audio seems to get transmitted). Unchecking it gets
the corruption (Which one would assume should be chosen so it actually
gets converted
