Between the time the tutorial you tried to use and Xubuntu 9.10, Xfce
was completely re-written. The code changed greatly, and this causes the
method to fail now. Reading the comments, it should have been obvious
that many people had issues attempting to follow that method.

Xubuntu?

Was this the Xubuntu 9.10 final release image?
Do you know the date of the image used?
