My only explanation is that there may be a race condition with the mounts listed in /etc/fstab - both / and /v3c are "pass 1" mounts. I'll change /v3c to be a "pass 2" mount and see if it happens again. -- ls can't cross mounted filesystems with ".." in path https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/48297
