I contacted easytag developer about this issue of contacting freedb.
"Hi,
Since more than one month, the manual search didn't work since MAGIX
aquired freedb.
But www.gnudb.org offers a similar service that you can be used with the
patch attached to this mail for EasyTAG 1.99.12.

I had the same issue. Try using a different freedb server in
Preferences. I've had no more crashes so far since changing from the
default one.

Same problem here and via the forum I heard more people have identical
problems (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=203370). There is
contact with the database, but the program halts when it tries to
download the data. I hope this can be fixed very soon.
