This bug also happens to me, and it happens all the time. I have now my
own contact in my contact list and can't remove it. Here is my butterfly
log. I cleared it before reproducing the bug, so it's the first lines
that refer to the bug.

This very bug has been affecting me as well (and has been annoying
enough to me to motivate me to create a launchpad account just to
complain). I'm using the Empathy 2.30.2 client that came with my Ubuntu
10.04 install. Like Jan, I've found that the bug doesn't manifest itself
all the time, but for
Now after reboot i can no longer reproduce the bug. I experienced the
bug on an up-to-date Ubuntu 10.04 amd64 install with empathy 2.30.2 -
so the bug is still not fixed and will probably stay there until someone
figures out how to reproduce it for sure, and whats causing it.

In the debug dlaiog i get different logs whether i open it before or after
trying to add a contact:

OK, i was just making sure that this wasn't anything new. It seems to
only be happening with the PPA though, so if you can, use the empathy
provided in the ubuntu repositories for now. The upstream report could
use some more information from those experiencing the PPA issues.

I set up my account on Empathy today and encountered the same problem.
Also 10.04.
Same thing happens if someone else sends me an invite to add them to my
contact list. The sender on the invite is my own address, not the one
from the contact.

The steps to reproduce the issue with me are exactly the ones described
in the Bug Description.
Chat menu, add contact, account msn, in the identifier field I type the
e-mail address of a friend, hit tab or click anywhere, his e-mail
address gets replaced with mine after a couple of seconds.
