Also confirmed the problem is bypassed with desktop effects on remote
machine turned off, don't need them on my remote machines so this is no
longer an issue for me.

Yup controlling a freshly installed remote v10.04 x64 machine gets one
screen then no updates/control until I go turn of effects on the remote
machine (ATI fglrx from ATI, HD5830). Local machine's (v9.10 x64)
Compiz and Nvidia prop drivers on local desktop seem to make no
difference.

It doesn't work in 10.04 either. :-( I get one initial screen paint,
and then nothing updates no matter what I do.
I am running a clean and up-to-date install of Lucid 64-bit on a Dell
Latitude D630 laptop, using the "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver
(version current) [Recommended]" restricted

the issue is sure removed when you deactivate desktop effects, but thats
exactly the issue. It does NOT work with desktop effects.
Well lets see how it behaves on 10.04 :)

When using the nvidia-restricted driver and compiz desktop effects the
vnc server will not refresh the screen. This is being caused by the
xserver not getting “damaged” by the nvidia-restricted drivers.
Disable Compiz on the remote machine
System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Visual Effects = No
