I rebooted, then suspend-resume cycled, and sound is now working. Audacity is also not skipping or taking exorbitant amounts of processing power at the moment. I'll try to figure out how I got it to skip again and report back. -- audacity skips, consumes 110% processor https://bugs.launchpad.net

I have the problem with the audio both from .aup files and .wav files. Exporting to mp3 seems to work correctly. Using Alsa, PortAudio V19-devel, playback to default (just changed to pulse, problem persists, none of the other settings give me any sound). I followed the instructions as requested,
