Fixed by removing modem driver which is known to cause conflicts with
sound devices.

I removed sl-modem-daemon and sound is now working without having to do
sudo alsa force-reload

Double-check which kernel is actually being used when booting. It might
be using the Jaunty kernel instead of the Karmic kernel. Try 'sudo
update-grub' to fix if this is the case.
