I have done some research on this problem and I believe the following
info may be helpful in narrowing this problem down.
I believe the problem is related to interrupts. Creative Labs claims
they think the problem is errant bias voltages on the circuit boards but
the noise only begins as the opera

I got the same on Audigy 2 ZS Notebook. I described it here
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/503165 . It's
definetely rather case of alsa rather than pulseaudio.
Anyone can take care of this, please ?! I think this consider most of
the people with emu10k1 based cards!

The other workaround makes the sound system mute. No sound is produced
at all.

I am only guessing here, but after reading
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_enable_audio_codec_power_saving
could you try editing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and edit the line:-
options snd-ac97-codec power_save=1
(change the 1 to a 0)
If the line does not exist (it doesn't on my machine),
This bug was previously marked as a duplicate of bug #442463. I marked
that bug as a duplicate of bug #381201 (which was reported first). In
order to do so I marked the duplicates of #442463 as duplicates of
#381201.
However, I think this bug is not a duplicate of bug #381201, this is
because th

My computer, using an Audigy 2, also has these popping noises. I viewed
the different parameters for the emu10k1 module (modinfo snd-emu10k1),
but there's no powersave options. I didn't have these issues in 9.
The power_save_controller parameter does not affect your hardware,
because yours is AC'97-based not HDA-based. Indeed, when you read your
PciMultimedia.txt attachment, you'll find that your sound driver is snd-
emu10k1 not snd-hda-intel.
