I found the problem! If I do iwconfig it tells me that txpower is off.
Everyone else who has this problem, try doing:
sudo iwconfig wlan0 txpower auto
It should then work!

I was wrong. If I enable wireless networking, it says "Device not ready"
and it stays that way.
