I see this also, though sometimes even in the live session, I do not see
the black rectangle. When I do see it, holding the mouse over it seems
to make it sometimes reappear until you move the mouse away. Also, I
see the thin black strip you describe, even after booting into the
installed system
Similarly, running the installed system, I get the strip of black pixels
on the top pixel row, but the black character cell (or whatever it is)
in the top left corner doesn't appear any more.
The black cell is there in the live session.

I suspect usplash/xsplash might be interfering.
